What Is Probiotic Advantage?

Probiotic Advantage is a probiotic supplement produced by Mountain Home Nutritionals on behalf of chiropractic doctor, Dr David Williams.

The product is available in capsule form in packets of 30 caplet. Each capsule contains 2 billion colony-forming units (CFUs)1 of probiotic bacteria. The product is suitable for adults only.

Ingredients

Each Probiotic Advantage capsule contains the following mixture of five different probiotic bacteria:

  • Lactobacillus acidophilus

    Probiotic Advantage

  • Lactobacillus plantarum

  • Lactobacillus salivarius

  • Lactobacillus fermentum

  • Bifidobacterium longum

The product also contains several additional ingredients:

  • Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose

  • Pectin

  • Microcrystalline cellulose

  • Sodium carbonate

  • Silicon dioxide

  • Stearic acid

  • Guar gum

  • Turmeric (color)

The formula and capsule are vegetarian. However, the product is not suitable for vegans as it contains trace amounts of milk. The product is also neither suitable for those on a gluten-free nor a kosher diet.

Advantages

Probiotic Advantage does not require refrigeration. It can be stored between 59oF (15oC) and 86oF (30oC). Room temperature is ideal! This makes the product well suited to taking on trips away.

Additionally the product has an eighteen-month shelf-life. This is slightly longer than the average for probiotic supplements and gives you plenty of time to consume your probiotics.

Every capsule is covered in an enteric coating to ensure that the probiotic bacteria pass through the stomach acid intact, delivering the beneficial organisms to the intestines where they can begin their work.

Furthermore, this product contains a mix of probiotic bacteria, which increases the chance of at least one species being effective for you.

Finally this product contains two of the most researched species of probiotic bacteria: Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum. These two species have been studied extensively for their health effects.

Disadvantages

The key disadvantage to this product is that in comparison to most probiotic supplements, it contains a low number of probiotic bacteria. The majority of adult probiotic supplements contain between 5 and 10 billion CFUs of probiotic organisms per serving.

High potency probiotic supplements often contain in excess of 50 billion CFUs. Probiotic Advantage contains a mere 2 billion CFUs of beneficial bacteria per caplet. Whilst this may be adequate for maintaining existing good health, for specific health problems where therapeutic use is required, we would recommend trying a stronger, more potent probiotic supplement such as VSL#3 (also written VSL3) or a Custom Probiotics preparation.

Additionally the low level of bacteria contained in the product makes it expensive per CFUs of bacteria when compared to other probiotic supplements. See our cost comparison page for specific details of how to compare fairly the cost of different probiotic supplements.

Our Evaluation

Probiotic Advantage user review

We have given this product a two-star rating. It contains a good mix of probiotic bacteria in enteric-coated capsules, which can be stored at room temperature. However it loses three stars for its significantly low probiotic count, its additional ingredients and relatively high cost.
